Somebody in Dubai Marina opens Google, types dentist near me, glances at the three businesses in the map pack, and taps one. That entire decision takes around eight seconds. Everything that determined which three businesses appeared happened weeks or months earlier, inside one free tool that a great many Dubai businesses claimed once and then never opened again.
This is the full playbook for winning those eight seconds, updated for how local search actually behaves in 2026.
The three factors Google openly documents
Google publishes its local ranking logic, and it has not changed in years. Relevance is how closely your business matches what was searched. Distance is how far you are from the searcher or the location they named. Prominence is how well known and trusted your business appears across the wider web.
Distance is largely outside your control. A clinic in Deira will not out rank a clinic in JLT for someone standing in JLT, no matter how good the profile is. Which means every hour you spend should go into relevance and prominence, because those are the two levers that genuinely move.
Setup, and the mistakes that quietly cost rankings
Verification first. An unverified profile does not appear in Maps or local results at all. It is invisible, not merely weak.
Your primary category is the strongest single relevance signal you control. Choose one precise category, not the broadest available. Add secondary categories only for services you genuinely deliver, because irrelevant categories dilute rather than expand.
Use your business name exactly as it appears on your signage and trade licence. Adding keywords to the name is a common shortcut in the UAE market and it invites suspension, which costs far more than it ever gains.
Dubai addresses need care. Tower name, floor, office number and community, in the order a courier would need them. Then drag the map pin to the actual entrance, because automatic geocoding in Business Bay and JLT is frequently off by a tower or two. If you are a service area business such as a maintenance company or a mobile service, hide the address entirely and set a service radius instead.
Keep your name, address and phone number identical across your website, directories, social profiles and listings. One phone format everywhere. Inconsistency is the most common invisible drag on prominence.
Set hours properly, and then maintain them. Use special hours for Ramadan timings, Eid, National Day and any Friday variation. A profile showing open when the door is locked generates exactly the kind of review you do not want.
Fill in attributes, payment methods and languages spoken. In Dubai, listing Arabic, English, Hindi, Tagalog or Russian is a real conversion factor, not a formality.
What changed recently, and why it matters
Google discontinued the Business Profile Questions and Answers API on 3 November 2025, and began removing the public Q&A section from profiles in December 2025. It has been replaced by a Gemini powered ask experience that generates answers on the spot, drawing from your profile data, your website, your reviews and other listings about you.
That single change reframes the whole discipline. Google will answer customer questions about your business whether or not you supply the material. If your site does not clearly state your parking situation, your Ramadan hours, whether you take walk ins, which insurers you accept or what a service typically costs, the AI will assemble an answer from whatever it can find, including reviews written by strangers.
So the FAQ content that used to live on your Google profile now needs to live on your own website, written plainly, marked up with structured data, and kept current.
Separately, the old chat and call history features were retired on 31 July 2024. In the UAE this matters less than it might elsewhere, because WhatsApp is the default business channel here. Put a WhatsApp route in front of customers wherever Google allows it, and make sure somebody is genuinely answering it.
Reviews are the fastest lever you have
Volume, recency, average rating and your response rate all feed prominence, and reviews now also feed the AI answers being generated about you. Four practical rules.
- Ask in person at the moment of satisfaction, then follow within the hour with a short review link on WhatsApp
- Never incentivise, never gate by asking happy customers only, and never buy reviews
- Respond to every review within 24 to 48 hours, including the difficult ones, without defensiveness
- Reply in the language the review was written in, particularly Arabic
A calm, specific reply to a one star review persuades more future customers than the five star reviews above it. Everyone reads the complaints first.
Photos, posts and the activity signal
Upload real photographs regularly rather than once. Exterior with visible signage, the building entrance, the parking arrangement, reception, the team, and genuine examples of your work. Customers arriving in an unfamiliar tower are looking for reassurance that they are in the right place.
Post at least weekly. Offers, new services, events, seasonal hours. Recent evidence suggests Google is weighting active engagement such as posting frequency and review response speed more heavily than static profile history, so an untouched profile ages badly. Native scheduling now makes a weekly habit realistic.
Populate the services and products sections in full, with prices or ranges wherever you can commit to them. That content feeds directly into what the AI can say about you.
What your website has to contribute
Build one substantial page per service and per location. Not fifteen clones with the community name swapped out, which reads as duplication to both Google and the customer. Add LocalBusiness structured data, embed the map, repeat the exact name, address and phone number in the footer, and write real FAQ content in the body.
Mobile speed is not optional given how these searches happen. And pursue a handful of genuinely local links: your chamber of commerce, community directories, UAE trade press, suppliers and partners. Ten relevant local links will outperform a hundred generic ones.
Measuring it without fooling yourself
Use the profile performance report for calls, direction requests, website clicks and the searches that surfaced you. Tag your profile website link with UTM parameters so this traffic is separable in analytics. And check your map pack position across a grid of locations rather than from your own phone, because your device knows where you are and will flatter you every time. Give any serious effort 60 to 90 days before judging it.
A 30 day starter plan
- Week one: verify, correct categories, fix the pin, complete every field, audit name and address consistency across the web
- Week two: upload 15 new photographs, publish the first two posts, build out the services section
- Week three: launch the review request routine and answer every existing review
- Week four: publish or rewrite your FAQ page with structured data, then set the weekly posting and review response rhythm as a standing task
If you would rather not run this yourself
The Business Blueprint handles local search and digital growth for businesses across Dubai and the UAE, including profile optimisation, review systems and the website content that AI driven local results now pull from. You can book a strategy call at https://thebusinessblueprint.ae/
Local search rewards consistency far more than cleverness. A profile that is accurate, active and answered every week will beat a better funded competitor who set theirs up once and walked away.
